6 Steps to Build a Car Wash Business From The Ground Up

  • Step 1: Plan your car wash (Week 1)
  • Step 2: Get necessary permits and licenses (Week 2-3)
  • Step 3: Secure funding (Week 4-5)
  • Step 4: Build your car wash facility (Week 6-7)
  • Step 5: Hire and train employees (Week 8-9)
  • Step 6: Open your car wash (Week 10)

Let’s dive into the details.

Step 1: Plan Your Car Wash (Week 1)

This step reminds me of a familiar adage, “If you fail to plan,”…you know the rest…, “you’re planning to fail.” So in the first week, you want to plan everything out in detail.

Planning is the foundation of every startup and can help you avoid costly mistakes.

But what does planning before opening a car wash involve?

1- Conduct Market Research to Identify Potential Customers And Competitors in Your Area

Market research is the first task of your planning phase.

But how do you conduct car wash market research?

  • Visit a few car washes and car wash equipment manufacturers in your area to know what works and what doesn’t.
  • Interact with your competitor’s clients and get their thoughts on their desired improvements.
  • Besides in-person visits to car washes, study trends on the internet and business periodicals to find out how car wash businesses are performing in similar areas as yours.
  • Read reports by the International Carwash Association on the industry’s current trends.

Conducting market research will help you with the second phase of planning.

2- Decide on The Type of Car Wash

The demographic data you’ve gathered from your research will help you determine the type of car wash you could invest in. Is a self-serve, automatic, or full-service car wash profitable in your region?

For instance, if there are a lot of luxury car owners in your area, consider offering a high-end detailing service.

3- Choose The Right Location

Once you’ve identified your target market, you need to choose a location that is easily accessible and visible to customers. Ideally, locations close to major roads and with a lot of traffic are a good fit for your cash-wash business.

American businesswoman and television personality Barbara Corcoran once said: “The right location can make or break a business. It’s not enough to have a great product or service; you need to be in the right place at the right time to succeed.”

But before you purchase a property, consider factors like zoning laws and proximity to other businesses.

4- Draw Up a Detailed Business Plan

A business plan provides the road map on what you’ll do to reap from your hard work. A business plan carries your mission statement, company description, goals, product/service, marketing strategy, equity investment, and financial projections.

A business plan can also help you secure funding from various financial institutions. As you can see, planning your car wash business may seem like a daunting task, but it is crucial to your success.

Let’s dive into weeks 2 and 3

Step 2: Get Necessary Permits And Licenses (Week 2-3)

Once you’ve completed your business plan, the next step is to obtain all the necessary permits and licenses for your car wash business.

This step ensures you comply with all the local and state laws and regulations. You’ll spend the next 2 to 3 weeks researching and obtaining all the necessary permits and licenses from local and state authorities. Of course, the requirements depend on your location.

Fortunately, the SBA website provides a list of business license offices you can go to for help.

Some of the permits and licenses you may need for your car wash include:

  • Zoning permit
  • Building permit
  • Business License
  • Environmental permit.
  • Water and sewer permit

Once you have all the permits and licenses, track their renewal dates. Operating with an expired permit is like having none.

While this step seems simple, we allocated it two weeks because obtaining these permits and licenses can take time.

Remember, you may need to pay fees for these permits and licenses, so factor this into your budget. Some states also require that you insure your business, so ask your state business office whether you’ll need insurance.

And even if your state doesn’t require it, insurance cover will protect you in case of any accidents or damages to your property. Workers’ compensation insurance will also protect your employees if they’re injured.

Overall, obtaining the necessary permits and licenses will ensure that your car wash business is legally recognized and that you’re paying the appropriate taxes. And you’ll avoid costly fines and legal issues down the road.

Step 3: Secure Funding (Week 4-5)

Week 4 and 5, you will focus on the capital. Without adequate funding, you may not open your car wash business unless you have saved a lot of money to finance the startup.

But since most entrepreneurs don’t have sufficient funds, I recommend exploring different ways to finance your startup

Here are the common funding options for your car wash venture:

  • Investors
  • Bank loans
  • Crowdfunding
  • Venture capital
  • Small business grant

Once you identify financial institutions or individuals you can approach for a loan or grant, you need a plan to convince them your business is worth investing in.

How do you do that? Create a solid financial plan that details startup costs, operating expenses, and projected revenue. Of course, this plan should accompany the business plan I discussed earlier.

Lenders sympathetic to your course may call you to negotiate the loan terms, so ensure you have excellent negotiation skills. You could get financing with favorable terms to boost your chances of success.

You’ve planned, acquired necessary permits, and secured funding; it is time to bring your dream into reality in step 4.

Step 4: Build Your Car Wash Facility (Week 6-7)

Building a car wash in an empty space or turning an existing structure to accommodate your business requires architectural skills. So, hire a reputable contractor to build your car wash facility.

Once the structure is ready, equipment and supplies come next.

From your research, you’ll know the modern energy-efficient cash wash equipment to install. Suitable equipment will significantly slash your operation cost and carbon footprint.

Standard car wash equipment you’ll need includes:

  • Water Recycling System: It captures and filters the water used in the car wash process for reuse.
  • High-Pressure, Low-Flow Washers: These machines use less water than traditional car washes.
  • Biodegradable Cleaning Solutions that are safe for the environment.
  • Plumbing and electrical systems
  • Electric Pressure Washers that eliminate the use of gasoline or diesel fuel.

Alternatively, you could invest in waterless car wash machines or spray cleaners for cars, especially in places with water issues. These green machines are environmentally friendly and could save you a ton of money.

And as you install appropriate car wash equipment, ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations. You have installed modern car wash machines in your facility by week 7. Now you need people to help you run the business before your open the doors. And that brings us to step 5.

Step 5: Hire And Train Employees (Week 8-9)

A car wash facility is consumer-focused. This means that your employees should be people-oriented.

The hiring and training process often takes time. The process involves advertising positions, conducting interviews and background checks, and training employees on car wash equipment, customer service, and safety procedures.

During interviews, take note of your candidate’s body language and communication skills. The success of your business depends on your employees’ ability to interact with co-workers and customers.

Although your startup starts small, I recommend developing an employee handbook with policies and procedures to ensure that everyone is on the same page. These policies also imprint the seriousness of your business on your employees’ minds.

By week 9, everything seems ready, and the long-awaited time is approaching. Let’s find out.

Step 6: Open Your Car Wash (Week 10)

The final stage is opening the car wash doors to customers. But before you make a move, I recommend launching a pre-open-day market campaign to promote your car wash through:

  • Social media platforms
  • Radio and newspapers
  • Fliers
  • Holding a grand opening party

You could offer cash wash services at a discounted rate or provide free services on the open day. And as customers flock to your business, have a genuine conversation and make them feel welcome.

In time, monitor operations and adjust your business plan accordingly. Focus on customer satisfaction and maintain a high level of service to increase customer retention rate.

Turn Your Car Wash Dream into a Reality in Weeks

Starting a car wash business can be scary, but you can succeed with the proper guidance and plan. I understand that you may be unsure, thinking that the car wash business is too complex to handle, but you got what it takes.

Stick to this tried and tested guide, avoid the costly mistakes many new car wash businesses make, and position yourself for success.
